HAPPY New Beginnings

A member of our church leadership started the meeting by sharing a scripture. A friend of his who is going through rough times said this was her "Scripture of the Year"...and it's a good one:
Doctrine & Covenants 123:16-17 -- You know, brethren, that a very large ship is benefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm, by being kept workways with the wind and the waves. Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

Today's testimony meeting meant anyone could speak. Our former bishop shared he'd decided his 'Word of the Year' would be the one his family started the year off with - HAPPY New Year! "Happy" -- that's a good one.

Ethan was one of 3 youth asked to share his experience fasting at the chapel-packed Break the Fast meeting. He was the first to speak and shared of his experience praying for feelings of peace because he's been stressed out about school. He was stressed Friday about getting his math class at a certain time or else he couldn't work at all; he's waiting to hear word on acceptance to the University of Utah any day; scholarship applications and starting a new term finish out his big mind. He did awesome!

Kiana asked at dinner: Is quinoa expensive?
Stuart: Yeah!
Kiana: Oh, 'cuz I just always wanted to try it.
Stuart: What? Just for fun?
Kiana: Yeah, I've never had it before so I just wanted to try it.
(silence)
Stuart: Why would you want to try chemo?
Kiana: Huh?
Me: Quinoa! Like rice...not chemo!
The power of communication :)

Maiya spent about two hours tonight doing four of her dolls' hair. Kiana joined in and did one to help her out. She wasn't too happy about the leftover buffet dinner, "Mom, what if we run out of leftovers?" I looked at our counter...fat chance of that happening.

The wishbone finally is dry enough and these two had a playful tug to reveal a victor...Maiya! She laughed and confessed she'd strategized knowing which side would prevail.
